What are you doing for Halloween Rudy?

How I love this question every year. Well to answer that, Im probably working. I learned a long time ago that unless Halloween actually lands on the 31st its the weekend before that counts. If that makes any sense. For example this year the 31st lands on a Wednesday ,so it is Halloween but not a very good one sense everyone has the excuse to bail on you due to work or school the following morning. With a Halloween that lands on a weekday I take it that when people ask me ” Rudy what are you going to be for Halloween?” actually means “Rudy what are you doing the weekend before Halloween”.  Im about to make a point to all this trust me, Im not just typing gibberish to waste your time.  This question is of course annoying only when people don’t understand that I would work on whenever Halloween celebrations would occur.  This annoyance of only lasts a second or two since Im not a total d-bag that hates on people for asking a totally innocent question. However…. the annoyance is turned ten fold when a “makeup” flake asks me what Im doing on Halloween!

Thats right folks this is another installment of “makeup artist” flakes and what grinds my gears.  So as most would know my peak season is around the Halloween season. Which  starts in late August til the first week of November. Because people do have last minute halloween parties in the first week of November to bid farewell to ghosts and goblins.  Every year what I love most is hearing the braggart words that spew out of the “makeup artists” mouths. We all know them, makeup hobbyists who like to brag about their skills at knowing every type of makeup technique under the sun. Oh the alumni of YouTube University. Heres my big pet peeve about this group around the busy season, they don’t take it seriously. Many of them talk about how all they want to do is makeup and that its a passion they would love to make living from. Year after year I have been blessed with an abundance of work during this time of year. When I can’t do it I pass it along to other people. What pisses me off is when the clients I send their way aren’t booked. Not for a lack of skill mind you, some people just want to hire someone to do their makeup regardless of skill level. But because they would rather dress themselves up to go party or what have you. Its gets to me for two reasons….. First if a client calls me and I refer them to someone else it looks bad not only on the other artist but on myself because of the referral. The Second being if you want to take this “Passion” seriously them you have to make a sacrifice of Halloween. Its the only time of the year where money is a guarantee.

When I was young I had a mentor jokingly poke fun at me that I would rather dress up on Halloween than make money. I was young and stupid. I wasted many Halloweens doing nothing of significance when I could have seen the business opportunities. If your passion is makeup then be smart about it.

Well that rant fizzled out…..Ugh sorry I was watching season 8 of desperate housewives.
